News - Everest Expedition

During 2007, Russ Lamb (a senior assistant in our Employment Department) and Sam Kay (a senior assistant in the Investment Funds Group of our Corporate Department) went on an expedition to climb Mount Everest by way of the Southeast ridge, the same route that led to the successful first summit by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953.  Russ and Sam left the UK on 14 March, arrived at Base Camp on 1 April, spent six weeks acclimatising on the mountain and establishing the higher camps before finally reaching the summit after an arduous few months on 20 May.  They returned home safely on 31 May.  They also managed to provide regular updates from Base Camp, which give some more details on their experiences during the two and a half month expedition. To read more about their updates please click on the link 'Online Diary', on the left-hand menu.

Russ and Sam were also trying to raise money for The Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust (SDBTT).  Each year in the UK, 6,500 adults are diagnosed with a malignant primary tumour, in addition to 13,500 diagnosed with a secondary tumour from other cancers.  Brain cancer now kills more children than leukaemia and a child diagnosed with a brain tumour has a 60% chance of survival after a five year period, compared to an 85% survival rate in respect of leukaemia.  SDBTT has become the largest single funder of laboratory-based brain tumour research in the UK and is devoted to both finding a cure for brain tumours and providing support to patients and their carers.

To date, Russ and Sam have raised over £25,000 for this charity.
