Philip joined Travers Smith as a trainee in 1995 and became a partner in 2005. Before qualifying as a solicitor, he was a Lecturer in Law at the University of Bristol.
Philip advises on a wide range of issues concerning occupational pension schemes, including advisory work for ongoing schemes, litigation and disputes in the High Court and before the Pensions Ombudsman, and project work such as scheme mergers, amendments and liability management exercises.
Recent work highlights include advising:
- the Mirror Group Pension Scheme on a £250m buy-in of pensioner liabilities
- the Akzo Nobel (CPS) Pension Scheme on a £1.4bn longevity hedging policy with ReAssure, a subsidiary of Swiss Re
- the ITN Pension Scheme on complex security arrangements
- the trustee of the Dow Chemical pension scheme, in relation to a pensions-driven reorganisation of Dow's UK operations
Chambers UK, 2012 lists Philip in Band 2 of London “leading individuals”, and comments that he is noted for his “incredible intelligence and solution-oriented approach.”
Philip is a member of the Association of Pension Lawyers and he speaks regularly at conferences and seminars on a wide range of pensions topics.
