Vanessa Kalijnikoff Battaglia

Senior Counsel

Vanessa is a senior counsel in the Finance Department where she is part of the Derivatives & Structured Products Group. She has a developed transactional and advisory practice and is qualified in New York and Brazil. Vanessa is recognised as a 'Rising Star' by The Legal 500 UK.

Vanessa's practice focuses on derivatives and structured products and her clients include banks, asset managers, investment funds, fintechs, pension schemes and corporates. She regularly advises on derivatives, repo, stock lending, custody and collateral arrangements, hedging restructuring and OTC derivatives clearing.

Vanessa guides clients through regulatory developments such as EMIR, SFTR and Brexit and their impact on derivatives arrangements. She also advises UK pension schemes on their investment arrangements, including LDI strategies and fiduciary management agreements.

Vanessa has recently undertaken a secondment at Investec where she advised the bank’s strategic hedging, fund solutions, commodities and FX trading desks.

Vanessa is a member of a number of ISDA and AIMA working groups on derivatives, benchmark reform, sustainability and fintech.

Vanessa has co-authored articles for Funds Europe, the Journal of International Banking and Financial Law and Global Legal Group (GLG) on various topics including LIBOR discontinuation, the EMIR initial margin requirement and the use of smart contracts in the derivatives space. She is also a contributing co-author to Global Legal Insights, Fund Finance, on a chapter regarding derivatives at fund level, and to GLG, The International Comparative Legal Guide to Derivatives, on the England & Wales chapter.

She has taken speaking roles in recent events, including a webinar on LIBOR discontinuation, a roundtable event on fund level hedging and a panel discussion on investments in Emerging Markets hosted by Women in Derivatives (WIND).

Vanessa is an active member of WIND and the firm's Gender Balance Committee working to foster a more inclusive workplace for all. She is also a member of the firm's Latin America group and plays an important role in the development of the firm's international strategy, working closely with the firm's International Board on various initiatives.
