Travers Smith's market-leading position in private equity gives us an exceptional overview of the private equity fund market. We have particular expertise in structuring carried interest and co-investment arrangements for fund managers. Where a fund aims to attract high net worth, non-domiciled individual investors or managers, we advise on the complex issues relating to the remittance basis of taxation.

Richard Stratton, who leads the investment fund's tax group, is second-to-none in his understanding of the taxation of limited partnerships and unit trusts. The team has pioneered innovative fund structuring with its in-depth knowledge of the range of onshore and offshore vehicles available to investment funds.

"Richard Stratton focuses on investment fund and partnership issues and is considered 'extremely knowledgeable' in the area."

Chambers UK

The investment funds tax team acted on some of the earliest conversions of fund management companies into limited liability partnerships and we have extensive experience of the use of limited liability partnerships as tax efficient management vehicles.

We advise on all aspects of the structuring (and, in recent years, re-structuring) of hedge funds. Richard Stratton sits on the Law Society´s Tax Committee and plays a leading role in consultations on issues such as changes to the investment manager exemption and the offshore funds rules.

Our knowledge of real estate fund structuring is extensive. We understand the issues for UK investors wishing to invest in global real estate and the tax concerns of offshore investors seeking UK real estate opportunities. We also have unrivalled expertise in stamp duty land tax planning. Emily Clark is a member of the British Property Federation's tax committee.

As well as unquoted fund structures, we have built a market-leading reputation for our work in establishing Venture Capital Trusts and we have long-standing experience in investment trust work.
