Pro Bono: Colours Caribbean

Overview

As a firm, Travers Smith demonstrates a strong commitment to championing access to justice, equality, and inclusion for all. Colours Caribbean, as an LGBTQIA+ rights advocacy organisation, aligns closely with our firm's values and pro bono priorities. Given the significant challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ communities in the Caribbean, this work represents an opportunity to help secure robust, long-term legal protections for a highly marginalised group.

Since 2019, Travers Smith's Dispute Resolution department has provided ongoing pro bono legal representation to Colours Caribbean. The team has acted on behalf of Colours Caribbean in proceedings before the courts of the Cayman Islands and Turks and Caicos Islands, as well as before the English High Court, the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council (JCPC), and the European Court of Human Rights. This work has primarily involved assisting Colours Caribbean in defending the Civil Partnership Law, 2020 (CPL) in the Cayman Islands, promoting equal rights for LGBTQIA+ persons, and supporting legal challenges to discriminatory legislation and practices.

More recently, our team played a pivotal role in Colours Caribbean's successful intervention in an appeal before the JCPC from a decision by the Court of Appeal of the Cayman Islands. The JCPC's judgment in this matter (Kattina Anglin v Governor of the Cayman Islands [2025] UKPC 30) was handed down on 30 June 2025 and represented a great victory for LGBTQIA+ individuals in the Cayman Islands.

Our work with Colours Caribbean has been recognised at multiple prestigious awards, including to be shortlisted at the British Legal Awards 2025, the LawWorks Awards 2025, and the LexisNexis Legal Awards 2026.
