Andrew King Scholarship

Overview

The Andrew King Scholarship is aimed at students from low socioeconomic backgrounds who may lack the financial means or wider support to focus fully on their university studies, but who possess the intellectual potential to thrive. As part of the selection process, a number of candidates will be invited to experience life at Travers Smith, gaining meaningful work experience that they may not otherwise have had the opportunity to access.

Andrew was a deeply valued colleague to so many at Travers Smith. Having joined the firm in 1986, he went on to become a Partner in the Dispute Resolution team in 1996. Alongside his legal practice, Andrew devoted considerable time and energy to supporting the firm's Trainee Solicitors, serving first as an Early Careers Partner and for many years as Training Principal. Andrew retired from the Partnership in 2022, working as a consultant for a further year before full retirement in 2023.

Andrew held a firm belief that raw intellectual ability was the foundation of a successful legal career, and that talent - regardless of background - should never go unrecognised or unsupported. He was an informal mentor to a great many people throughout the firm, and it is in this spirit that the Andrew King Scholarship has been established, carrying forward the values he embodied.

What does the scholarship offer?

The successful Andrew King Scholar will receive £3,000 at the start of every academic year for the duration of their undergraduate degree.

Throughout their time at university, the Andrew King Scholar will have two Travers Smith mentors; one from the Early Careers team, for any application and process advice, and one Associate. They will have multiple touch points across each year with both mentors.

In Year 1 of their degree, they will be invited to complete paid work experience over the Summer, to be supervised by their Associate 'mentor'. In Year 2, we would guarantee them a space on our Summer Vacation Scheme. The Early Careers team will provide advice prior to the Scheme and the offer of a conversation with a future trainee about how to best prepare for the Scheme. Throughout Year 3, we would maintain a structured programme of touchpoints to ensure continued engagement.
