In collaboration with Ukrainian law firm Arzinger, we recently hosted a webinar on Ukraine's wartime defence-industry boom and the legal framework foreign companies need to navigate in order to do business in it.
The session opened with the current market backdrop - covering Ukraine's naval drone warfare and the losses inflicted on the Black Sea Fleet, the country's Soviet-era industrial base, and the transformation of Ukroboronprom into UDI.
We then explored the shift from a closed $5–6bn market to the world's leading arms importer, the Brave1-driven surge in drones and electronic warfare, and the growth in foreign investment, with over 200 start-ups and $1.5bn raised to date.
Finally, the Arzinger Defence Group walked through the rapidly evolving legal framework and its practical implications, covering merger control and the incoming FDI-screening regime, the temporary MilTech merger exemption, IP and technology licensing, export control, arms procurement and testing, and the preferential regimes available to MilTech companies.
