  • Closure of DEFRA consultation


    Closure of DEFRA consultation on due diligence requirements for larger businesses to prevent forests and natural areas from being converted illegally into agricultural land. 

  • Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting ("SECR")

    December 2020 / early January 2021

    In scope entities to include SECR reporting in annual reports for annual reports ending 31 December 2020. Read our briefing on SECR. 

  • European Commission is due to publish its "zero pollution action plan"

    2021

    The European Commission is due to publish its "zero pollution action plan" (part of the EU Green Deal) during the course of 2021, with a view to promoting the protection of air, soil and water. 

  • New environmental measures


    1. A new environmental watchdog, the Office for Environmental Protection is proposed to take over environmental governance matters from the European Commission and ECJ.

    2. UK Government intends to launch UK carbon market and/or carbon emissions tax. 

  • EU Conflict Minerals Regulation


    EU Conflict Minerals Regulation (which applies to importers of certain minerals) comes into force. 

  • 26th UN Climate Change Conference

    1 November 2021 - 26 November 2021

    UK set to host the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow. 

  • New air quality targets

    October 2022

    Deadline for the UK Government to set new air quality targets under the Environment Bill.
