Baroness Manningham-Buller Former Director-General of the Security Service (MI5)

Eliza Manningham-Buller headed Britain’s Security Service (MI5) from 2002 to 2007, before serving as Chair of the Wellcome Trust from 2015 to 2021, one of the world’s largest charitable funders of medical research and other activity to improve human health. From counter terrorism to pandemics, Eliza has led organisations through remarkable and pressurised times. Eliza reflects on twenty years as a leader of two very different organisations, but which share many traits and goals in managing the unpredictable and trying to keep millions safe. She outlines how leaders’ priorities must change in order to keep pace with shifting demands from all stakeholders and the constant emergence of new, often unimagined challenges. From existential threats such as climate change and pandemics to diversity and fairness, leaders have to seriously consider an ever-changing, complex landscape of priorities that influence both their organisation’s success and society’s future. At MI5, Eliza led the Service through significant change, expansion, and scrutiny as it dealt with the growth of Al-Qaida terrorism after 9/11, and in response to the 7/7 attacks in London. Prior to serving as Director General her various roles took her to Washington during the first Gulf war, as well as seeing her responsible, at separate times, for work on Irish terrorism, surveillance, technical collection, finance, and IT, before she became Deputy Director General in charge of intelligence operations. During her time as Chair of the Wellcome Trust, Eliza helped lead the UK’s biggest charity, overseeing funding for scientific research into all aspects of health and wellbeing, from infection to mental health, as well as responding toCovid-19. Having foreseen the threat of a pandemic on the scale of Covid-19, the Trust also helped to establish the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI). In presentations Eliza covers lessons in leadership from throughout her career, drawing on her experience in the most demanding of environments to stress the need for leaders in any walk of life to engage in frank dialogue and invite criticism: “Do not try to be something you’re not; take responsibility for your team and remember that praising people takes seconds and can make an enormous difference. And don’t forget that humour can be found even in the most awful situations.” Eliza is a crossbench peer, President of the respected foreign policy think-tank Chatham House, was Chair of Council at Imperial College for four years, and was chosen to deliver the prestigious BBC Reith Lectures. Her analysis of the theme Securing Freedom also formed the basis of her book of the same title.

He has also presented Breakfast, Newsnight, HARDtalk, Daily Politics, and a range of news bulletins including the main News at One, Six and Ten bulletins. Sir Alex Younger Former Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6)

The UK government extended Sir Alex’s contract throughout the Brexit negotiations so that he could maintain an even keel through a time of extraordinary uncertainty. This extension makes him the longest-serving MI6 chief in 50 years. Sir Alex rose to Head of Counterterrorism at the Special Intelligence Service, where he was heavily involved in security for the London Olympics. He was later made deputy director, shortly after which he was nominated as chief of MI6. His fictional counterpart, ‘M’, is a mainstay character of the James Bond film series. Sir Alex delivered a rare speech at the University of St. Andrews, his alma mater, where he emphasised the need for skills used in 21st century espionage to keep step with technical innovation. In an interview with the film star Angelina Jolie for Time Magazine, he revealed some of his political views. These included his assertion that liberal democracies have a duty to stop the breakdown of consensus around human rights by redrawing the parameters of enforcement. Before joining MI6, Alex was posted overseas in Europe and the Middle East as a British Army officer. Rising through the ranks, he became lieutenant, and later captain, before transferring to the Regular Army Reserve of Officers and finally retiring from active military service.

TRAVERS SMITH'S CHARITY PARTNER

A note from our managing partner, Edmund Reed

Our commitment to responsible business and sustainability is a core value of Travers Smith. Now, more than ever, the firm is using our resources to engage with young people and disadvantaged communities, to build meaningful charity partnerships and to use our skills to help effect positive social impact.

Along with providing financial aid to charities via our own Foundation, every two years we identify, and work with, a principal charity partner. Our major charity partner is Little Village, a London-based charity which offers practical and direct help for families living in poverty with children under the age of five. The charity appeals for good quality donations of outgrown items and then redistributes everything from beds and buggies to clothes, toys and toiletries - gifting them to families dealing with challenging circumstances like homelessness, unemployment, domestic violence, or simply unable to make ends meet. The ongoing cost of living crisis means that demand for their support is rising. Little Village is a relatively new charity with the potential to make a huge impact.
