Travers Smith LLP has announced the promotion of four lawyers to Senior Counsel as part of its 2020 promotions round.
The Senior Counsel appointments follow the recent promotion of five lawyers to the Travers Smith partnership. All appointments are effective from 1 July. The new Senior Counsel and their principal areas are:
John Buttanshaw – Operational Risk
John is a regulatory lawyer specialising in environment and safety, energy and planning laws, alongside wider and compliance matters. He has particularly extensive experience in advising on project development and permitting, and wider regulatory, matters in the energy and infrastructure field. He acts for clients ranging from fund managers through to developers and major industrial operators on transactions, developments and ongoing advisory mandates across all types of generation (with a particular focus on renewable technology) as well as in the energy distribution and supply, transport, water, district heating, and social infrastructure sectors. John also advises a range of investment sector clients on wider risk and environmental, social and governance (ESG) matters (including reporting and transparency obligations) - a rapidly evolving field of the legal market in which he is fast becoming recognised as a leading practitioner. John is recommended in the Environment section of The Legal 500. He is a member of UKELA, participant in the CLLS Planning & Environmental Law Committee, an active contributor to the International Environmental Law Network, and a contributor to Commercial Environmental Law & Liability (Sweet & Maxwell).
Vanessa Kalijnikoff Battaglia - Derivatives & Structured Products
Vanessa is a finance lawyer focusing on derivatives and structured products. She is qualified in New York and Brazil. Vanessa regularly advises banks, asset managers, funds, fintechs, pension schemes and corporates on derivatives, repo, stock lending, custody and collateral arrangements, and structured finance. She guides clients, including, Apax Partners, Fundsmith, Generation Investment Management and Värde Partners, through regulatory developments such as EMIR and their impact on derivatives arrangements. She also advises pension schemes sponsored by AXA, Vodafone and Willis Towers Watson on their investment arrangements. Vanessa has a developed sell-side practice – clients include Nomura and Silicon Valley Bank. She was also seconded to the firm's client Investec for eight months in 2018 where she advised the bank’s trading desks. Vanessa is a member of Women in Derivatives and the firm's Gender Balance Committee. She is also a member of the firm's Latin America Group and plays an important role in the development of the firm's international strategy. Vanessa is recognised as a 'Rising Star' by The Legal 500 UK.
Jamie Parish – Finance
Jamie is an experienced finance lawyer, specialising in real estate finance, fund finance and speciality finance, acting for financial institutions, private equity and financial sponsors, investors, and borrowers. Jamie advises on all aspects of real estate debt financing, including investment finance, development finance, refinancings, and restructurings at all levels of the capital structure, with experience spanning asset classes including healthcare, student accommodation, serviced offices, retail parks, self-storage, research buildings, and multi-unit residential development. Jamie advises on the full spectrum of products in the fund finance space, in particular investor call bridge/subscription facilities, NAV and hybrid facilities, GP support/co-invest facilities, and equity commitment-backed facilities to funds, GPs, managers and investors across a range of asset classes. Jamie advises on complex and highly structured transactions in the speciality finance space, including traditional borrowing base facilities, warehouse structures for SPV assetcos, forward flow agreements and 100% advance rates, loan portfolio sales and servicing arrangements, across a range of sectors from mortgage-backed and SME lending to debt purchase and payment services.
Fiona Swords – Finance
Fiona has extensive experience advising many of the firm's key private equity house clients, as well as a range of high-profile public and private corporates, on their financing arrangements. She has particular expertise in leveraged and acquisition finance where she advises sponsors and borrowers on some of their most significant acquisitions. Fiona's recent experience includes advising Bridgepoint Development Capital on their minority growth capital investment in Reassured Limited, advising Caledonia Investments plc on its acquisition of Cooke Optics Limited, and advising Macquarie Principal Finance Pty Limited on their public-to-private acquisition of Premier Technical Services Group plc. She also advises various listed clients, notably Auto Trader plc and McColl's Retail Group plc, on their debt facilities. Fiona is a member of the firm's CSR Committee.
