Travers Smith hires leading Competition partner Daniel Vowden

Overview

Travers Smith LLP is delighted to announce the hire of Daniel Vowden as a partner in its Competition practice.

Daniel joins Travers Smith from Mayer Brown, where he was a Partner and Head of the UK Antitrust Practice.  Recognised as an expert across the full spectrum of UK and EU competition law matters, Daniel has acted on high-profile, challenging merger control cases, including numerous Phase II merger inquiries and matters requiring structural or behavioural remedies.  Having formerly practiced in Brussels, as a partner at Herbert Smith Freehills, Daniel’s in-depth UK knowledge is supplemented with extensive experience of winning international regulatory approvals for strategically critical, cross-border M&A deals.  This includes advising clients on successfully navigating increasingly complex foreign direct investment and national security rules, with Daniel's practice focused in particular on the UK’s National Security and Investment Act regime.

Daniel’s transactional skills are complemented with expertise in behavioural and advisory matters, including UK and EU cartel investigations.  Most recently he acted on the CMA’s investigation into suspected bid rigging regarding the supply of construction services to UK schools, marking the first instance of the CMA probing publicly funded tender procedures.

Daniel will work closely with partner Ingrid Hodgskiss and Head of Competition Nigel Seay, dividing his time between the London office and the recently opened Brussels office. He is the latest strategic addition to the firm, closely following the arrivals of funds partner Laura Houët, arbitration partner Andy Moody and employment partner Andrew Howard.

Andrew Gillen, Senior Partner commented:

“After a strong financial year, our firm is continuing to grow by investing in outstanding talent in areas of strategic importance to our clients. Daniel's arrival represents another significant step forward for Travers Smith, as we continue to deepen our expertise in key practice areas and support the evolving needs of our clients across our core markets.

"These new hires, following our strong Senior Counsel and Partner promotions earlier in the year, highlight our focus on both nurturing internal talent and attracting exceptional lawyers to join our practice. I am delighted to welcome Daniel to the firm at this exciting time in our growth, as we remain determined to deliver the highest standards of service and advice to our clients.”

Nigel Seay, Head of Competition commented:

“Daniel’s expertise across all facets of competition law, and his deep knowledge of both the London and Brussels markets, will help us to take full advantage of opportunities in this growing market, from complex merger control and foreign investment advice to behavioural investigations and regulatory policy. His rigorous approach and experience advising on landmark cases both in the UK and internationally will add considerable strength to our team. I look forward to working with him as we continue to deliver innovative and commercially focused solutions to our clients, and I am very pleased to welcome him to Travers Smith.”

Daniel Vowden commented:

"I am delighted to be joining the partnership at Travers Smith.  I look forward to working with my new colleagues to further develop the competition practice, and to help clients navigate increasingly complex regulatory challenges in the UK and internationally."
